The UK perspective
The UK Digital Strategy, published in March 2005 by the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit in conjunction with the DTI, clearly identifies a number of objectives and actions that the UK Government recognise need to be implemented in order to move the UK forward.

The Strategy recognises that “Information and communication technology (ICT) has become all pervasive in our working lives and increasingly in our homes as well. How we adopt and use this technology will be crucial for our future prosperity.

"We need therefore to create a country at ease in the digital world. Where all have the confidence to access the new and innovative services that are emerging, whether delivered by computer, mobile phone, digital television or any other device, and where we can do so in a safe and secure environment.

"But there is still evidence of a digital divide with some groups largely excluded from benefiting from access to the Internet. But cost is not the only or even the main barrier to take-up. First, some individuals may not have the confidence or skills to use computers, even though they may actually want to get online. Others do not see the relevance of the Internet to their needs. They do not see how ICT and broadband particularly can transform their lives. "

Digital Region will create an environment where access to broadband based services is cost effective and accessible to all residents in South Yorkshire. It will converge technology in a simple and straightforward manner and enable local residents, businesses and public sector organisations
to extend their use of technology beyond the current boundaries.
